This 1937 MG SA Saloon, chassis # SA0720, comes from the widely recognized “Cobb Collection” and is being offered for sale at No Reserve. Dick and Dotty Cobb of Gardiner, Maine developed an enthusiastic love for the MG marque. Their love evolved into a life long passion and led to the creation of one of the finest, most respected MG collections in the United States. It was their wish that their collection come to the Owls Head Transportation Museum for the benefit of the museum and for all to enjoy. This vehicle is one of a select few that are being offered from the collection in order to help maintain the wonderful examples of MGs that will remain.
Based on the Wolseley Super Six design, the SA model represented a departure for MG from their line of small sports cars for a venture into the larger luxury market to compete with the likes of Jaguar and Bentley. In all, 2,738 SA models of all types were produced.
Chassis#SA0720 is confirmed to have been formerly owned by well known automobile executive Bob Lutz and was exhibited at multiple shows and concours events by the Cobb’s during the mid 1990’s to early 2000’s. With its elegant lines and design features, it is easy to understand why prior owners felt so fondly about this automobile. On the exterior this SA is painted in an attractive ivory blue two tone color combination that is accented nicely by the blue wilton wool and light tan leather interior. Natural wood finish trim outlines the interior cabin and original gold color finish gauges on the instrument panel. Other features include a Pegasus radiator ornament, dual outside horns, dual driving lamps, sunshine roof, a central lubrication system and on-board jacks. The older paint, while highly presentable on the majority of the vehicle has blistered and flaked off in some spots.
Until recently, this SA has sat for an extensive period of time in storage or on static display, having not run under its own power until the early 2000’s. Owls Head volunteers undertook an analysis check over of all of the systems to return this vehicle to a running condition. Worked performed on this vehicles included inspecting the carburetors and installation of an inline fuel filter. The brake master cylinder and wheel cylinders were removed, dissembled for inspection and either rebuilt and/or cleaned and reassembled. The electrical systems and wiring are older and while functional, may need further attention in the future. A full detailed repair and inspection journal was kept by volunteers and can be made available on request.
The 6-cylinder engine, #QPHG2381, is paired with a 4speed manual transmission and was found to run and shift well. The engine is a correct SA engine but is not original to the car. Owls Head staff and volunteers have driven this vehicle on museum property as part of their sorting out and inspection process. It is worth noting that this SA is an older restoration that has sat for close to 20 years in a non-running state. While museum staff have done a great amount of work in resurrecting this classic MG, further attention may be needed to bring this extremely solid 1937 SA Saloon back to its full driving potential.
