Well regarded as one of the finest automobile manufactures in American history, Packard represented an elegant blend of craftsmanship, style, and superior engineering. Offered for sale at No Reserve is this excellent example of one of the rarest wagons to be found in the market today, the Packard 15th Series 115-C wagon.
As the United States began to slowly emerge from the depths of the Great Depression by 1937, Packard was experiencing its best year for sales of its smaller six cylinder line of automobiles. New to the Packard line up was the woody wagon, first introduced to the market in late 1937 and only available on the 115 inch wheelbase of the Packard 15th Series automobile. Chassis were produced at the Packard factory, however each of these first year production wagons were specialty crafted by well respected coachbuilder, Baker-Rauling of Cleveland, Ohio. In total, it is believed that only around 60 of these first year production Packard wagons were built, making this fine example one of the few surviving first year Packard Wagons, and one of the rarest wagons to be found anywhere.
Not only is this 115-C one of the rarest wagons to be found, this particular wagon is also one of the finest examples of any woody wagon to be found. This fully restored vehicle has been lovingly maintained by its long time owner, a collector of fine automobiles and avid yachtsman. The Baker-Rauling body features numerous curves, inlaid panels, wooden lathed roof and many other fine woodworking techniques that would impress even the finest furniture craftsman. The flow of design from the curvature of the front hood and fenders is blended seamlessly into the woodwork. The interior upholstery is a classic soft brown leather and a complete set of side curtains, in excellent condition is also included. The wood body was restored by the Mick Nickels in Travis City, MI where as the metal body was done up by Joe Batthourer in Yorktown, IN.
Under the hood this Packard wagon is powered by one of the smoothest running Packard-Six 237 ci engines to be found. It is paired with a three speed manual transmission that shifts effortlessly as you cruise down the road. This is due to the mechanical restoration performed by Terry Kesselring’s Antique Auto shop in Hebron, KY. Simply stated, this Packard wagon is an extremely rare piece of Packard history, was restored and maintained to a high standard.
