Built during the depths of the Great Depression, this extremely rare, Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) award winning 1934 Packard Twelve 1107 Dual-Windshield Phaeton is a stunning example of one of the finest motor cars ever produced. For more than a century, automobile enthusiasts have considered Packard to be the epitome of elegance. Stylish designs and high-quality engineering propelled Packard to the front of the highly competitive luxury car market. This Phaeton proudly embodies all the characteristics of Packard’s high standards and is one of the most sought-after examples within the true classic car collector community.
The 11th Series Packard Twelve 1107 was considered the top of the line offering for the 1934 model year. Production records from this period are inconsistent. However, it is widely accepted that this 731 Phaeton is extremely rare with an estimated 10 examples ever being produced.
As one would expect of a vehicle of this rarity, this Packard was restored to an extremely high standard. It was formerly owned by well-known and established Packard collector Mr. John Wheatley of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Under Mr. Wheatly’s ownership, this Dual-Windshield Phaeton won a prestigious CCCA National First Prize Award at the Grand Classic of Denver in 1982 with badge no.1030. Mr. Wheatly entered two Packards in that show, both winning National First Prize Awards. Any Packard formerly owned by Mr. Wheatly is highly sought after by serious collectors and this automobile is no exception. Currently this Packard is being offered from a private collection of extremely rare Classic and Brass Era automobiles.
Lovingly cared for, this Phaeton has been maintained to a high degree and shows amazingly well for an older restoration which speaks highly of the quality of work that was performed. This Packard is finished in an elegant, two-tone combination of burgundy on the fenders and upper body panels complemented by a brilliant red all side body panels. The canvas roof accents the red tones exceptionally well. The burgundy color scheme is repeated throughout the interior compartment of the leather upholstery, door panels, and is accented with a soft brown carpeting. Chrome wire wheels wrapped by white wall tires present a sporty elegance to the presentation. Multiple accessories including metal covered dual side mounted spare tires equipped with mirrors, dual side spotlights, and wind-wings complete the look of the car. The paint and finish show extremely well with its brilliant shine and overall is in very good condition. Restored over 40 years ago, close inspection reveals a few select spots where the paint has developed imperfections due to aging over the years. Overall, this car is a stunner, a beautiful example of the pure elegance of Packard.
As attractive and well designed as this Phaeton is on the outside, the heart of this automobile is equally exceptional. Packard’s famous 445.5ci V12 engine is whisper quiet at idle, starts exceptionally well, is smooth and responsive to the throttle. Power is transferred through a smooth shifting three-speed selective Synchromesh transmission. As the vehicle warms up, the radiator louvers open and adjust as designed to help facilitate proper cooling. Under the car, the chassis, frame and components are as clean and precise as the rest of the vehicle presents. Again noting, this car is a former CCCA First Prize Champion, and it proudly represents that.
Despite all the beauty and design represented by this Packard, it is a rolling work of art that was meant to be driven. Drivers will appreciate the smooth accelerating and shifting of this true classic. Passengers will experience a smooth, luxurious, spacious ride as this 1107 seems to float driving down the road. Aiding in passenger comfort, this Phaeton is fitting with the correct accessory dual windshield, providing added comfort to passengers in the rear.
Opportunities to own a vehicle of this pedigree are rarely found. After years of ownership and private transfer, this wonderful Packard will be offered for the first time for public sale. This 1934 1107 Packard Twelve, Dual Windshield Phaeton is a wonderful example of a bygone era and is one of the finest and rarest luxury automobiles ever produced. It is a CCCA National First Prize Champion, and a worthy addition to any serious collector’s stable. Simply “ask the man who owns one,” and they’ll tell you how special this automobile is.
