This 1914 Lea Francis motorcycle is an extremely rare, mostly original, and well cared for example of British motorcycle history that is ready to find its new caretaker. Of the1500 examples produced from 1912-1924, this 1914 Lea Francis is one of an estimated 25 remaining and is recognized by the Lea Francis Club of England as one of the earliest known examples.

This 1914 Lea Francis motorcycle is an extremely rare, mostly original, and well cared for example of British motorcycle history that is ready to find its new caretaker. Of the1500 examples produced from 1912-1924, this 1914 Lea Francis is one of an estimated 25 remaining and is recognized by the Lea Francis Club of England as one of the earliest known examples.
This motorcycle is prominently featured in the book Classic British Bikes by Andrew Kemp and Mirco De Cet. Lea Francis was universally recognized for their innovation and build quality. Some of these innovations include early adoption of front brakes, clutch operation by both hand and foot, and fully enclosed primary and secondary chains.
Described by the consignor as a mostly original motorcycle with sidecar, it is powered by its original 430cc V-Twin J.A.P side valve engine. Reportedly this Lea Francis was used for 24-hour endurance racing in England, hence the racing number plates affixed to the sidecar.
Many of the accessories on the motorcycle are believed to be original and are extremely rare. Examples include a dual pointer Bonniksen speedometer, a cloisonne’ trimmed rear view mirror, a glove holder/cosmetic case with mirror, a Chelsea clock and multiple early brass era acetylene powered headlights and tail light.
Included in the sale is a full binder of historical records, manuals, Lea Francis information and the original British registration or “Buff Card” first issued in 1920. Also included in the binder are various British registration tax discs.
The current owner of this 1914 Lea Francis is a longtime collector of early motorcycles and is a three time participant in the famous Motorcycle Cannonball, cross country antique motorcycle competition.
According to the consignor, this Lea Francis is an exceptional piece that runs and operates extremely well and has been meticulously cared for. Conscientious care has maintained its running and overall condition. Fuel, overall systems check, and oiling for use are all that would be required to run. In 2019, this cycle won a “Best of Class” award at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance. Sold with on Bill of Sale
