This is a rare 1947 Mercury Eight Model 79 M V-8 Convertible Coupe. A beautiful example that is fresh from the Bobby McGowan estate here in Connecticut where it had resided in his possession for over 20 years. Prior to that, it came from a decasdes-long ownership from a local Connecticut collector who restored the car to a high level winning an AACA junior and Senior Award in the 1990’s. Today the car still looks great finished in its original and incredibly scarce special-order color of Pirate Red with matching leather with tan cloth interior. We treated it to a cosmetic detailing as well as a new black canvas top bound in matching red leather. The top is a power top for ease of operation, and it works as it should with all aspects inspected.
Mechanically we completed a full service including a carburetor rebuild, coolant system flushing, changing of all fluids and a brake service. It runs and drives incredibly well. The restoration has held up well and is ready for top down driving this summer. It is tour ready and while it is no longer concours condition, it still likely ranks as one of the prettiest Mercuries out there.
It is a beautiful older restoration award winning car. Part of a collection of cars from an estate, this gorgeous Mercury Eight Convertible Coupe has been in that collection since 2000. The chrome and trim are still in show condition. The paint is decent with blemishes throughout in the lacquer due to age, but overall very presentable for any local show. The interior is in nice restored condition with its original radio, all brightwork & instruments as well as seats and carpeting looking beautiful. All electronics and vacuum accessories work including lights, wipers, instruments, etc.
This Model 79M Convertible Coupe starts instantly, runs, drives and stops exactly as a well-maintained Merc of this era should. It doesn’t pull and is well mannered & predictable in all circumstances. Under the car is a spotless chassis with no rust or rust repair evident anywhere. The trunk is also spotless with an older spare & jack in place.
