This 1953 MG TD, chassis # TD27930, comes from the widely recognized “Cobb Collection” and is being offered for sale at No Reserve. Dick and Dotty Cobb of Gardiner, Maine developed an enthusiastic love for the MG marque. Their love evolved into a life long passion and led to the creation of one of the finest and respected MG collections in the United States. It was their wish that their collection come to live at the Owls Head Transportation Museum for the benefit of all to enjoy. This vehicle is one of a select few that are being offered from the collection in order to help maintain the wonderful examples of MGs that will remain.
Until recently, this TD has sat for an extensive period of time in storage or on static display, having not run under its own power until the early 2000’s. Owls Head volunteers undertook an analysis check over of all of the systems to return this vehicle to a running condition. Work performed on this vehicles included inspecting an oil check and service, new coolant, new battery, new points, spark plugs, and distributor cap. The fuel tank sending unit was replaced and the fuel pump was repaired. All of the brake shoes and cylinders at each wheel were replaced.
The 4-cylinder engine is paired with a 4speed manual transmission and was found to run and shift well. The engine is a correct TD engine but is not original to the car. Owls Head volunteers and staff have driven this vehicle on museum property as part of their sorting out and inspection process. While museum staff has done a great amount of work in resurrecting this classic MG, further attention may be needed to bring this extremely solid MG back to its full driving potential. Sold with a title.
