This 1962 Ford Thunderbird,a true factory code 76B “Sports Roadster,” is an amazing example of a documented, low mileage vehicle that has been exceptionally maintained in its original condition. Original low mileage vehicles of this nature do not come up for public sale often and this fine example is being offered at NO RESERVE. Any serious enthusiast or collector would be proud to have this vehicle parked in their stable. To date, this vehicle has just over 12,000 original, documented miles.
From the beginning, this Thunderbird has been cared for and maintained to a high standard. Originally, this vehicle was specially ordered by a doctor’s wife from Spaulding Automobile Company in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Per her wishes, this vehicle was specially ordered in the cream white finish with light blue interior and matching color vinyl top. This custom color combination is extremely rare in the Thunderbird world. According to documentation provided, the car was only used on special occasions and every winter was stored back at the dealership. Prior to her passing, the original owner sold the vehicle back to the dealership, where they used it sparingly and kept it stored on stands when not in use. When the dealership closed in 1985 the owner retired and took this Thunderbird with them to Arizona where it was sold. At that time in 1985 it had 11,250 miles. In 2000 the vehicle was donated to be sold as a church benefit. The current and 3rd serious owner, a collector of high quality Fords and Shelby Mustangs, purchased the car from that sale in 2001 and has lovingly maintained it since. This history is documented and is included in the sale.
This Thunderbird sports its original 390ci / 300hp engine paired with its original automatic transmission and drivetrain. Driving this vehicle is an experience, it runs and drives as one would expect. The engine is smooth and the car seems to glide effortlessly down the road. Again, it is worth noting that original low mile survivor cars of this nature are extremely rare. On inspection one will notice that even the tires are the original from the dealership and according to the current owner have never been off of the rim. They look almost like new, however it is worth noting that for safety reasons, new tires should probably be put on before any distance driving as the originals are over 60 years old. On the exterior the cream white and light blue color combination blend perfectly. At one point, some paint work was done on the exterior to one fender but was done to such a high degree to match the car that it is virtually impossible to notice.
The Sports Roadster was a rare, unique and highly desirable Thunderbird option for 1962. The fiberglass tonneau cover covers the back seat and creates a sleek two seat roadster. Brilliant Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels accent the curves and lines beautifully. On demand, the original power top smoothly operates as it should and the original customer ordered light blue vinyl is still in exceptional condition for its age. This amazing time capsule is loaded with factory options available at that time. Since their purchase, the current owner has diligently continued this car’s legacy of proper storage and maintenance.
Documentation with this sale includes the two original factory built tickets, a copy of notarized ownership history and mileage notations, photo of the vehicle in storage at the dealership on stands, and the original 1962 Ford Dealer Thunderbird promotional book.
