Offered for sale with No Reserve is this 1964 Mercedes-Benz 230SL roadster. This roadster has been well cared for its entire life and is coming to the auction from the estate of a long time collector. Original documentation included with the sale provides a detailed explanation of the early history of this vehicle.
According to the documentation, the original owner of this vehicle was a United States Citizen who was working in Italy on assignment for the Westinghouse Electric Company. In September of 1964, a letter was written to Mercedes expressing a desire to purchase a 230SL and ship it back to the U.S. on their return in November of that same year. Multiple letters and communications between Mercedes and the original owner document the ordering, pickup, and exportation process of this beautiful 230SL.
Based on the paperwork, this 230SL was in the possession of its original owner until 1992. Detailed records from the original owner show mileage readings for each year from 1965 to 1992 and also list what service was performed and at what mileage. Multiple letters between the original owner and Mercedes during their ownership suggest that this Mercedes was always maintained to a high standard. Currently the odometer reads 80,900 miles and is believe to be originals. The final odometer reading by the original owner in 1992 was just over 71,000miles.
A November 1993 appraisal indicated that this vehicle underwent a full restoration. The appraisal states that the restorer had “completely gone through the car and done extensive and thorough restoration wherever needed to body, paint, upholstery, suspension, and mechanical. A matching red hard top, with stand, is included in the sale.
Little information is provided from the estate of the current owner regarding this vehicle, however based on the condition of the vehicle it is evident that this car has been well maintained to current day. Well cared for 230SL roadsters with in this condition and historical documentation are not easily found and would be a welcome addition to any collectors lineup. Sold with a registration.
