Redesigned for 1986, the Mazda RX-7 grew up a bit, becoming more of a sophisticated GT sports car. The styling sported subtly flared fenders along with the oh-so-'80s pop-up headlights. Redesigned for 1986, the Mazda RX-7 grew up a bit, becoming more of a sophisticated GT sports car. The styling sported subtly flared fenders along with the oh-so-’80s pop-up headlights. It also packed more power from the rotary engine, now up to 142 horses which, thanks to the RX-7’s light weight (under 2,800 pounds) provided peppy acceleration to go along with its athletic handling.
This RX-7 is the high end GXL trim level, with alloy wheels, A/C, a power sunroof and a plush interior with power windows, tilt wheel, cruise control and an AM/FM/Cassette audio system with equalizer.
The all original body is in excellent shape with the original red paint still sporting a nice even gloss. The original alloy wheels are in good shape as well and the newer tires have plenty of tread. Inside, the seats, dash, door panels, headliner and carpet look great, and are further testament to the low mileage and excellent care the car has received.
On the road, the RX-7 runs great and handles and stops as a sports car should. Indeed, it must be driven to be believed as the rotary engine is super smooth right up to redline as is the automatic transmission, and the car has a light on its tires feel when running through a twisty section of blacktop.
